Poem for an old friend: RIP

Today came news about an old friend
My heart aches and chokes on sadness
Memories stopped in time fast forward to the end
From a distant day’s version of happiness

Times past are unfolding in my mind
To a familiar feeling of yesterday
Yet I’ve allowed the years to slip by
And long, long ago I moved far away

Though time has faded many things
And though many storms were braved
One saddened soul still suffering
Lost the greatest battle today

Reminders of better times come into focus
Remembering stories, I must smile
At the laughter brought to the rest of us
By a good soul who was one of a kind

RIP Grant Wilson
