Painting: Sunset Beach Mosaic

{click to see entire image}
This fun, mosaic-like illustration is a mixed media painting on heavy watercolour paper.
Mixed Media = graphite, pigmented inks, gesso, coloured pencil, acrylics.

Here’s how it started: a quick pencil sketch, then 2 colours of pigmented inks on 300# D’Arches watercolour paper. I started with these inks because I know their powerful dyes will show through subsequent layers of gesso and acrylics, giving a nice underpainting structure to build upon.

Scraping white gesso across the surface to subdue colour while adding depth (2 or 3 layers applied)…

Adding more colour with Acrylic paint…
After this step I quickly sketched the tile segments using red coloured pencil before layering more acrylic paint. My iPhone was charging so I skipped taking pics of this step.
